If you aren’t a sneakerhead, let me tell you now: the world of sneakers is much more complicated than you think. The styles, terms, marks of authenticity and so on… overwhelming! It’s a hybrid of fashion and a hobby, and getting just a taste of it while writing this article was enlightening. That’s what I love about talking to strangers — I learn something new from each Fashionisto I meet.
Okay, so I like these shoes just on account of appearance, but apparently they’d make some sneakerheads absolutely freak out. As this Fashionisto put it, they are the “Holy Grail” sneakers of the sneaker world: original release Air Jordan OG 5 Grapes. They were a big part of ’90s pop culture and have donned the feet of Michael Jordan, Will Smith and Chris Rock. These shoes have been re-released a couple times because they are so coveted, but this is an original pair from 1990. This Fashionisto bought them secondhand a few years ago, and apparently he was extremely lucky.
Besides the fact that they are “Holy Grail” kicks, I love the bold, sporty look that they can add to any outfit. I don’t normally like the athletic look that so many IU students wear everyday: boring sweats and tennis shoes, but this is a variation on the look that is stylish, yet casual and comfortable. This Fashionisto paired his sneakers with some drop crotch track pants by I Love Ugly. The wonders that slightly better cut sweatpants can do! He kept it fun and carefree with a Big Bear crewneck sweatshirt from Profound Aesthetic and he tied the outfit together with a bold, abstracted camo jacket.
Hint: Sporty doesn’t have to be purely athletic — it can be a cool style in itself. Get yourself a nice pair of sweatpants and some awesome kicks (make sure to do a little research first), and you can add some sporty spice to any look.
