In fashion, it is hard to be edgy while trying to incorporate new ideas into your wardrobe. It’s safe to say this struggle applies to both guys and girls. Oftentimes, you will find Fashionistas/os keeping up with the latest trends to be edgy and in style. This is exactly what I witnessed with this daring and creative Fashionisto I found on campus for this week! Typically this rougher and more rock ‘n’ roll style that this Fashionisto portrays isn’t something that I would wear myself, but I definitely appreciated the time and thoughtfulness that he took in crafting his outfit. He combined many trendy items in a way that really worked. My personal, classic and preppy aesthetic are in sharp contrast with this more street style and urban look, but I think that as a Style Guru I should strive to portray all kinds of style!
This outfit has a lot going on in regards to details and various trends; however, this Fashionisto is able to pull it off by doing two things: having a tremendous amount of confidence in his personal style, and keeping the colors of his outfit on the darker side to let details of the individual pieces do all of the talking. There are two trends in this look that I want to focus on, leather and spikes.
We will start with leather first. Leather has become huge in men’s fashion over the past few seasons, but it has become popular in different ways than it has been in the past. Instead of the typical leather jacket, men’s fashion now incorporates leather into pants, shirts, accents on various pieces, etc. This Fashionisto is wearing leather in both a bold and more subdued way. The bold way is going all out with a pair of leather pants, like these from Urban Outfitters, while the subdued way is incorporating it in the details of other main pieces, in this case his jacket. This Topman sweatshirt is a great way for guys to incorporate leather in a much more subtle way.
The second trend I want to talk about is spikes. This trend has been decidedly bigger in women’s fashion, but there are several designers who have started to incorporate it into their latest collections. If you are interested in trying out this trend, just know that this is definitely a statement maker. I really like the way this Fashionisto incorporates spikes through his shoes and his hat, which doesn’t come off as over the top. Since the spikes on his shoes are black instead of silver, they don’t stand out as much and allow attention to be drawn to the other elements of his outfit. You can find a similar pair here.
Hint: If you are going to try out these trends for the first time I would advise taking it slow. Incorporate them into your looks in minimalistic ways to start out, then go for bolder pieces that really make a statement!
