This winter season, Fashionistos across campuses are putting fashion in their pockets wherever they go, literally. According to OxfordDictionaries.com, messenger bags are defined as, “a large bag with a long strap, worn across the body.” Clearly, half of the definition is missing, since the website didn’t mention anything about how messenger bags can serve as a way to carry objects and confidence from looking so good, obviously. The messenger bag can be traced back to the postman days when young men would use the side bags to transport snail mail to families in metropolitan cities like San Francisco or New York City. This could be the reason why we still see so many of the urban Fashionistos or California hipsters rock this look during fall and winter.
This Fashionisto chooses to wear a neutral-colored bag with his bulkier vest and shoes. Proportionally, everything is balanced with his wardrobe. The vest doesn’t make him look too large from the top half since his large messenger bag sticks out from the side. He also knew to use his bag to carry some textbooks he mentioned, since I caught this Fashionisto walking several minutes before class. His vest is from Burberry, shoes from Timberland and, last but not least, his bag is from Jack Spade.
Want to know what’s so great about an accessory such as this one? Messenger bags are often unisex! Many of these high-fashion cross-body bags work for women and men, so you Fashionistas don’t ever have to feel deprived. I’ve heard from male friends that they can’t find messenger bags that are masculine enough, but many of the styles I’ve seen from Coach and Nordstrom are simple enough where men and women can wear them. They are also versatile in the sense that you can wear them not only for carrying snail mail (or textbooks in today’s world) but also to work! Many leather messenger bags are acceptable to wear, which tones down a strict and overly polished work outfit.

Check out different types of workbags such as this Burberry one to wear along side a tailored outfit to the office. To transform the look from casual to professional, make sure to stick with dark brown, black and gray tones so that the bag serves as an additional accessory to your work attire and not as a distractor. Remember, always think of the type of audience you will be around when forming an outfit. You want to appeal to as many employees as possible while maintaining your look.
