LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS: Double Down on Denim

Let's Hear it for the Boys

Denim on denim: a fashion no-no right? Not anymore! Believe it or not, you can pull off this look without looking like a flower child from the ’60s or a boy band member from the ’90s (I’m looking at you, Justin Timberlake). While rocking this look successfully isn’t exactly easy, when done well it’s one of my favorite men’s looks. It’s really all about choices. What shades of denim do I choose? What do I accessorize with? (What’s an accessory?) Don’t worry boys, the rules for this trend are actually quite simple.

When it comes to washes, avoid putting two identical shades together. The key is to mix and match. Play up those pieces that are on opposite ends of the color spectrum. The easiest way to try this look is shown effortlessly on this Fashionisto. He has paired his darkest denim jeans with a much paler wash button-down. You want to look as if you meant to wear this full-on denim look not that you were too lazy to get dressed this morning. Another key player in recreating this look is your use of accessories. It’s easy for this look to dominate anyone so breaking the shades of blue up with a statement accessory like this Fashionisto’s H&M infinity scarf really helps add interest to the outfit especially when the color palette echoes his solid black T-shirt and all-over denim pieces. You can never go wrong with adding a graphic print to an otherwise monochromatic look. This gives you the perfect balance of personality and wearability.

It’s important to take any trend and make it your own. To me, this Fashionisto really put an urban twist on the look. With his addition of thick black-framed glasses, gray Nike sneakers and ever so slightly buttoned over shirt, he doesn’t look like he’s trying too hard to make this trend work. It seems like a natural collaboration.

I challenge all of you Fashionistos to put your own creative spin on this trend. If you can’t find a way to make it yours, just think of it as a No Strings Attached kind of relationship.

Hint: This is actually a very functional day to night look. If you’re looking to dress it up, throw a casual sport coat over the button-down and slip into a pair of utilitarian leather shoes. To dress it down, try pairing it with a leather motorcycle jacket with cool high-top sneakers. If you aren’t ready to commit to such an obvious all-denim look, start by mixing lighter denim with a more uniquely colored one, such as black or gray. Retailers such as J.Crew and Topman have a wide variety of washes and fits to choose from. This way, you can create the illusion of wearing different materials without screaming denim-on-denim upon your first try.
