Subtle beauty is a rare thing. It takes time to cultivate, and most people have trouble pulling it off. It requires a balance of many things: classics and trends, simplicity and zest and the big picture as well as the small details. Most college students have yet to learn these things; they are still experimenting with trends and discovering their personal style. Many don’t even quite know who they are or how they want to be perceived, let alone how to communicate that. How do you stand out without screaming for attention?
Here’s a Fashionisto who’s refined and clean-cut, yet still maintains a sense of style and individuality. What initially caught my eye was his classic simplicity. Examining his outfit further, I was surprised to see that he was wearing Dr. Martens. Typically associated with grunge, Docs are most commonly paired with flannel plaid or another trendy pattern. Seeing them worn in the same context gets boring. In this Fashionisto’s case, they add just a hint of grunge to an otherwise clean outfit. It’s easy to throw on a trendy item, but to wear it with understated taste: that is rare.
This Fashionisto elevated his worn-in Docs with a basic V-neck T-shirt, Burberry pants and a leather-trimmed canvas tote bag. He also wore a small gold chain necklace, a minimal watch, tortoiseshell sunglasses and a nose ring. Piercings, like Dr. Martens, are often overdone and have a certain stigma attached, but his was refreshing in this context. These accessories all pulled his ensemble together beautifully. It’s refined but has just a hint of edginess.
Hint: A simple, monochromatic outfit is classic, but without the right accessories, it can look boring. Don’t confine yourself to one specific style; doctor it up. Add an unexpected pair of shoes, or an accessory or two, for instant, classy know-how.
