LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS: Crazy for Cardigans

Let's Hear it for the Boys

January: a time for new classes, new crushes and new closets. With any luck, Fashionistos and Fashionistas received some clothing this past holiday season, and were able to update his or her wardrobe with trendy winter pieces. By styling a wardrobe created with holiday money combined with last year’s favorites, many Fashionistos have no trouble creating great looks for class.

Even in the Southeast, we have to endure winter sometimes. The change of weather often means a change of style for collegiates everywhere. Cable-knit sweaters that used to be reserved for the elderly are now making appearances in coffee shops and classrooms around the country. Swapping the thicker sweater for a cardigan transforms this age-old look into something a little more refined. Cardigans make Fashionistos look more like a “college-intellectual” and less like a “grandpa-at-the-museum.”

One of the best parts of January is that dates and get-togethers no longer have to mean going out and doing much more than grabbing a cup of Joe. This Fashionisto was seen in Starbucks between classes deciding whether or not he should button his forest green cardigan.

Cardigans can bring out each Fashionisto’s personal style. This particular cut allows Fashionistos to keep warm without inhibiting their personal style. You can leave it open, or button it all the way up. This Fashionisto opted to button it halfway and leave the last button unbuttoned to reveal his plaid shirt underneath.

Plaid is not just for lumberjacks anymore. With many young Fashionistas and Fashionistos frequenting vintage shops and thrift stores, we see much of this ‘90s fashion being worn on the street. Substituting a button-up would take this look from class to a meeting with an advisor or teacher. The suede boots add a mature touch, allowing a Fashionisto to wear them to to any occasion. Don’t be afraid to mix it up and try out a colored pair.

Hint: When recreating this look, remember that that winter clothes rarely go out of style. Hit up thrift stores in your area for some great finds. It is easy to re-purpose used clothing so if something isn’t exactly what you were looking for, don’t hesitate to bring it home and see what you can do with it!
