Men’s corduroys, or “cords,” are perennial favorites for winter style for a variety of reasons. First of all, depending on the type you get, they are perfect for all kinds of events. From weekend wear to even business casual, you will be able to reach for your cords time and time again. This Fashionisto chose a light brown pair, which when coupled with Timberland boots and a casual jacket, was a perfect outfit to wear to class on this freezing Michigan day. Corduroys are also popular because they come in a variety of cuts and colors, suitable for every body type. Like their close cousin the blue jean, they come in skinny leg, boot leg and straight leg cuts to flatter every body type.
Cords are unique in that they manage to somehow be completely timeless and perfectly trendy at the exact same time. The varying features on the spectrum from classic to trendy are the cut and the color. Vis-à-vis the cut of the jeans, the more classic style calls for a traditional straight leg pant, but if the Fashionisto wants to be more daring, he should choose a skinny-leg pair. This Fashionisto features a close cut straight-legged pair, which is very on-trend for both winter and spring seasons. Regarding color, the classic colors for a corduroy pant are generally browns, grays or navy — basically, neutrals that you can wear with any outfit. However, if you want to be a little more modern and daring in your wardrobe choices, go with something bolder. Cords now come in every color under the rainbow! My favorite picks for this winter season would have to be dark red (oxblood) and muted grey-blue, because they are both seasonal and wearable.
If you choose to wear some classic cords, then have some fun with the other pieces in your outfit! Neutral cords provide a great base for a creative outfit, so feel free to style away! This Fashionisto, for example, chose to wear a bright blue sweater to bring a pop of color to his otherwise neutral outfit. However, on the other hand, if you choose to rock a pair of bright green cords, don’t go wild with the rest of your outfit. You want your awesome pants to be the focal point here, so don’t wear a bright printed top or neon jacket that would compete for attention.
Hint: While corduroys are known as being primarily a winter/fall piece, they can transition to spring and summer as well! Pair them with a short sleeve tee and sneakers, and you are good to go!
