Everyone has those days where a T-shirt and sweatshirt just feel like the better option. The excuses are endless — you’re sick, it’s gray and cold out, you have a test you were studying for all last night or you literally have no more clean clothes. It happens to the best of us. East Lansing has many gray, cold days, leading MSU students to reach for their favorite sweatshirt, but stylish clothes can be comfortable (I promise)! One thing I’ve learned in the past year is that there are many easy alternative combinations that rival the comfort of your favorite sweats and T-shirt.
This Fashionisto starts his look with a dark blue T-shirt and black pants. One of the oldest and most outdated fashion rules is to not pair black with navy. Some people claim they look too similar and therefore clash, but why wouldn’t similar colors look good together?! My rule is dark colors most definitely go with other dark colors. Wearing black pants is a super easy way to look pulled together, even with a T-shirt and hoodie. They’re like a blank slate, ready to match with anything you put on. He wears his pants more fitted, balancing out the layers on top. I also like how he cropped the ends, which I always think allows for more attention to the shoes.
This Fashionisto layers a hoodie under and an army green bomber jacket. Army and dark green have become my new favorite colors and they can work surprisingly well as neutrals. Utility style jackets are still very relevant this season and worth the investment if you are looking for a new coat. They are also a more casual alternative to the popular peacoat. A subtle detail of this Fashionisto’s look that I love is his matching T-shirt and hoodie. Because the colors are so similar, they blend together and create a shared contrast with the green.
He completes his casual look with shiny, black dress shoes. It is an unexpected addition, but there are most definitely no rules against wearing your shiniest shoes every once in a while. Matching his shoes with his pants, this Fashionisto pulls of this look with only three different colors. An amazing feat when you think about all the different colors and shades you wear in a given day. Last but not least the look is topped off by a slouchy beanie, which proves that comfort is never out of style.
