Whenever you’re heading out to Center City, you will encounter a very groovy hipster crowd. Dozens of Fashionistas/os on the street don the best of the ’80s era. The hipsters typically show off in their motorcycle fringe jackets and distressed acid wash jeans. Although it’s a bit too hot for all that this summer, they’ve still inspired me to break out a peace sign, fringe crop top and braided head band. Right off the subway, I ran into this Fashionisto, and he was just casually leaning on the light post.
This Fashionisto stopped me in my tracks as soon as I spotted his old school style. The black felt fedora and Dwayne Wayne flip-up glasses add flare to the semi-casual outfit by reviving the ’40s and ’80s eras. He chose a thin gold chain and gold Michael Kors watch to perfectly accent the acid wash button-down shirt. The addition of the worn-down, maroon vintage dress shoes bring spice to the neutral outfit and keeps the fresh old school vibe going. Last but certainly not least, he finished off his look with a skinny pair of dress pants, which are a must to pull of this look and appear less casual.
Although the ’80s trend is beginning to become a fad, you can’t help but recreate it time and again. I am a sucker for Fashionistos rocking the Tom Cruise look from Risky Business. Similar to our Fashionisto, Cruise rocks sunglasses, except these are the iconic Ray-Ban Wayfarers. He also wears an unbuttoned charcoal blazer that covers up a simple black T-shirt. You can pair the outfit with Levi’s 501 jeans and the dark-colored lace-up Clarks.
So if you’re looking to work off this Fashionisto’s look, then note that an acid wash button down should most often be worn with a medium or dark-colored pant. When settling for a more laid-back touch to the outfit, choose a pair of red slim-fit shorts or medium-wash jeans and black oxfords. And, you can be funky by wearing over-the-calf socks or be chill with low-cut socks. I’d suggest keeping the gold accents, but try just a thin gold chain, minus the watch. And, for a colder summer night, you may opt to add a black blazer to keep you warm.
Regardless of if the ’80s is becoming the current trend, this Fashionisto just showed us how to put a unique twist on it. Rummage your closet for a similar look, and you’ll step out like Emilio Estevez, Denzel Washington or something of the sort.
Hint: The oxfords and lace-ups aren’t the only style shoes you can go for. Try boat shoes and be a little more relaxed for the day. Plus, boat shoes add comfort on those hot summer days.
