We’ve all heard it. In college, each one of us is a small fish in a big pond. I’ll be the first to admit that going to a school with 30,000 undergraduates is overwhelming. Every so often, I am reminded of the enormous scope of my school, and it never fails to astonish me. “Overwhelming” may not even be a strong enough word for it. It’s easy to lose your confidence among the masses. It’s easy to believe that there is nothing that separates you from the crowd. It’s easy, when you are here, to forget who you are.
I struggled with this during the beginning of my time here. I still do. However, part of the way I have managed to retain my identity during my freshman year was through my fashion. I had always dressed up in high school, and I didn’t change that in college, despite the uber-casual standard that permeates my campus. I knew that clothes would be the source from which I derived confidence. My style helped me preserve who I was.
This Fashionisto has undoubtedly cultivated an aestetic that sets him apart from the norm. The first thing that captured my attention about his look was his outerwear. He wears a knee-length, camel peacoat from the online men’s clothing startup, Bonobos (It’s not this season, but they have a lot of great men’s outerwear that you can find here). He is also wearing leather gloves, a trendy yet subtle vestige to the 1930s and ’40s . His scarf is a trendy black and white tartan pattern that really stands out against the plain coat.
On the bottom, he wears the holy grail. I’ve said it before and I will repeat it a thousand times: dark wash jeans instantly transform an outfit from casual to sleek. They can work for any season and they typically keep better than lighter washes. This particular pair really complements the lighter blue of the sweater and shirt, giving his entire appearance an ombre effect. For a bag he opts for a very hip and functional Abingdon laptop bag from J.Crew. I’m known to linger on every corner of that website, so I’d recognized the bag and was quite excited to see it in person. It’s a really nice color, and is spacious and professional. I highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a new schoolbag.
Perhaps the most interesting part of his outfit is his shoes. Believe it or not, this Fashionisto is actually showing very secret school spirit. His oxblood lace-up boots are by the brand Wolverine. This is a really cool company; they sell men’s shoes that are locally made in the state of Michigan. They say it’s great to be a Michigan Wolverine, but it’s also great to wear them.
Hint: It’s easy to just stick to the major brands that everyone else is wearing. But take note from this Fashionisto: sometimes lesser known brands and boutique shops have really unique pieces that will help you stand out. Do some shopping around, you never know.
