A huge trend this summer has been Do It Yourself, or DIY projects. Besides decorating wine bottles or creating your own wall art, another popular form of DIY is making, designing, decorating and altering your clothing.
This Fashionisto’s shorts are a perfect example of a DIY project. At one time, they were actually a pair of pants. After some cutting, they became shorts. Then, some paint on the Fashionisto’s fingers turned them from ordinary to completely unique. Over time, the Fashionisto has added more and more bits of paint along with writing and words in Sharpie. The words represent interesting and important experiences in the Fashionisto’s life.
While DIY takes an outfit to a new level, a DIY piece can never stand on its own. The Fashionisto’s grunge-style outfit consists of a vintage Keith Urban graphic tee to match the painted shorts. The tee is also marked in unique ways with a sharpie. Over the tee is a plaid flannel having the red complementing the same color in the graphic tee and in the paint on the shorts. The flannel is what draws together the top and bottom of the outfit.
This Fashionisto’s other accessories are also complementary to the main aspects of the outfit. The black hat and black bandana are dark and neutral, in order to keep the attention on the shorts and flannel. The shoes, however, are a medium brown color, which pulls out the shade of the shorts underneath the paint. While some may frown on the combination of black and brown, many people are starting to believe that the once disliked pairing is now seen as an intriguing way to blend darker colors.
Hint: Go crazy with your summer-to-fall DIY pieces! Buy a basic apparel piece and then fix it up to your liking. Cut shirts in different ways, screenprint patterns on pants pockets or even sew designs onto your hats. Don’t forget to pull your DIY piece together with other selections of similar color or design.
