Style Guru Bio: Lauren Ames

Style Advice of the Week

Hi! I'm Lauren Ames. I am a New York native and currently a senior at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. I have been interested in fashion ever since I learned how to pronounce “Fendi”. In high school my love for style blossomed when I took fashion art classes in school during the week and workshops at the Fashion Institute of Technology on the weekends. I truly love sketching- dresses, lingerie, and anything with layers, are my favourite to illustrate. This is apparent in my everyday personal style. I also love all types of photography. You can always find me with my camera snapping shots at music shows and of my friends. I love shooting music shows because there is always crazy lighting, and I love shooting my friends because I love when people's true personalities come out in a portrait. Fashion photography is definitely a passion of mine, because it combines so many elements of the things I love into one!

My favourite fashion trick is layering crop-tops over dresses because I love modifying everything I wear as much as possible. I like that with this technique I can turn a garment that I’ve had forever into a new piece. For instance, I have had my Nylon Tricot Figure Skater Dress in charcoal by American Apparel for years, but I feel like it’s brand new now after layering a white vintage lace top over it.

Another necessity of my personal style is comfort. I get super grumpy if my clothes aren’t 100% fit for both walking through the woods and going to party. Because of this, most of my heels are wedges. I purchased a pair of strappy brown wedges a few years back and they are extremely comfortable. I have worn them to class, out to dinner, and even walking around New York City for hours.

Neutral colors are a staple of my everyday attire; I love whites, greys, and nudes, especially because I love getting colorful tattoos and adding crazy colors to my hair, which act as my outfit’s accent color. Adding a brightly colored bag to a neutrally toned outfit is one of my favourite things to do, as well. A turquoise bag with a gold chain strap and navy blue tassel from H&M is the best accent bag I own. In my personal opinion, when wearing neutrals, you can never go wrong with bright blue!
