FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Kat Schmidt

Fashionista Spotlight

This week’s Fashionista was head to toe cool, from her unique turban-like headband to her brown leather Sam Edelman sandals. Her black and white polka-dot skirt, which she snagged at a thrift store, caught my eye with its feminine silhouette. Paired with a sleeveless white blouse, this Fashionista had a look fit for the women of Mad Men but managed to maintain a modern twist. Another thing I loved about this look was the accessories. Her arms and fingers were jeweled out in silver rings and a turquoise bracelet. With retro shades and a simple chocolate colored bag, this Fashionista was a sartorial success.

Name: Kat Schmidt

Major: Political Science and Communication Arts

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: If you had to shop at one store for the rest of your life, where would it be and why?

Kat Schmidt: Topshop — you can find anything you need there without totally breaking the bank. You can get the classics that you'll always need in your wardrobe as well as trendy, stand out pieces like dresses with asymmetrical hems or denim with studs. I also like that they have some different, funky accessory options.

CF: Can you think of an item of clothing or trend you refuse to wear?

KS: I'm seeing a lot of neon this season, and I can't really get into it. I think you can just as easily make a statement with the right combination of neutrals.

CF: How would you describe your personal style?

KS: First and foremost I like to be comfortable! I love to wear skirts and flowy blouses, but I'm also emotionally attached to my Converse and combat boots. It's kind of a quirky combination of urban and bohemian with some vintage looking pieces.

CF: Is there anything on your ‘must purchase for summer’ list?

KS: I'm torn between a pleated maxi skirt and a pair of American flag denim cut-off shorts… probably going to have to splurge and get both!

How To: This Fashionista found her statement making skirt at a thrift store, so check out your local vintage or resale shops for a piece similar to this. If you’re down on your thrifting luck, try something like this, which has the same feminine softness and neutral colors of the one worn by this Fashionista. Next add a crisp, white sleeveless blouse. This is a staple for every woman’s closet, so if you don’t already own one, this one from Topshop is a must-buy. Throw on a comfortable pair of brown sandals and add a similar colored cross-body bag like this one to tie the look together. Finally, throw in a piece of silver and turquoise jewelry for an unexpected pop of color.
