I’m very anxious and excited to represent the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. I’m currently a senior majoring in Fashion Merchandising Management with a concentration in product development.
I was born and raised in the South, and it was a challenge for me to identify with a style for myself once I moved to New York City from North Carolina. Three and a half years later, I would describe my style as Southern belle meets New York City. While my go-to look consists of all-black attire with chunky jewelry and big hair, I’m not afraid to carry a sense of the South with me in my style, using pops of floral, plaid or even a nice pair of rugged cowgirl boots. While I wish I had a closet similar to that of Serena van der Woodsen’s, I most notably look to Demi Lovato, Lucy Hale and blogger Rumi Neely for ways to enhance my personal style.
When it comes to fashion, I like to keep things less dramatic but not boring. Take Helmut Lang for example: The minimalist designs are simple yet refined and I’m a fan of the asymmetry, leather and clean cuts, which are design aesthetics on which I can relate my New York City style to. On the other hand, I consistently like the collections of Charlotte Ronson, alice + olivia and Whitney Eve by Whitney Port to bring interesting prints, colors and fun silhouettes to make any outfit a little more playful.
As a fashion student in what most like to call one of the fashion capitals of the world, I am fortunate to have the experience to explore and gain a closer insight of the fashion industry while I am still learning. One of my most notable fashion moments to date was when I was chosen as one of two students to represent the Fashion Institute of Technology at the WWD CEO Apparel and Retail Leadership Summit. During this event, I was given the chance to ask questions to two of the most influential and successful designers of our time, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, otherwise known as Proenza Schouler.
While I could go on and on about my fun with fashion, I’ll leave my posts over the next few months to do that. I look forward to expressing my thoughts through the style I see on FIT’s campus.
