There currently lies a blanket of snow sheathing over South Bend. The bitter cold grips you in its frosty fist, refusing to let go until you run into musty-gray buildings and slip along the cream-tiled floors. While most college students lay dormant in their cozy nests, the few that brave the cold prepare for battle. They suit up in steel-gray sweatpants as the boots zip up and the sweatshirts are pulled over. Soon enough, the weary college student treads onto unknown territory. Although it’s cold, there’s no reason to lose our style which is why I was startled when I spotted this Fashionisto on my way back from class. Despite the fact that campus has been coming down with a case of the winter blues, he was sporting an outfit that was bold enough to stand against the most fashion-saavy.
With his perfectly tailored blazer and bold purple pants, this Fashionisto was a force to be reckoned with. Although we’ve all seen our fair share of casual outfits “dressed up” with a simple blazer, it’s always a surprise when people add a little twist like this Fashionisto did. Underneath this, his structured blazer lies the almighty vest. The ever-elusive vest is a simple accessory, one that’s quick and easy to put on, but never gets the use that it should. It adds structure and definition when layered over his simple button-down shirt, but also adds some contrast and definition with its unique linen fabric. While the pants, shoe laces and perfectly plaid scarf work to add pops of boldness to the outfit, the baby blue vest works to complement the cool tones of the royal purple. It’s color is subdued enough to keep the brightness of the ensemble at bay, but bright enough to stand out from the stark white shirt. When paired with the blazer, this outfit is the perfect marriage of textures, prints and color.
Vests aren’t always meant for formal soirees and debonair galas. They can sharpen any casual outfit with their distressed denim, herringbone tweed and vintage brocade patterns to transform you into a stylish urbanite. Vests elongate the body, often creating long lines that make you appear taller and thinner. When dealing with vests, take heed, however. Although they are fun and easy to rock, the key to the perfect vest lies in its fit. They should be long enough to cover your waist and lie flat against your body. Typically, vests should be cut a little higher on your backside, but since it is 2013, times are changing and styles are changing. As long as it adds a little structure, you’re good to go.
Vests have endless possibilities. Pair this vest with a simple button-down for a look similar to this Fashionisto’s. Since it is winter, it’s always a great idea to opt for a field vest, pairing it with a well-fitted crew neck sweater or flannel shirt and striped scarf. It’ll add warmth and style to your daily ensemble! Feel free to experiment with different colors, patterns and textures, but if that’s a little too adventurous, you can always stick to the classic black vest and white T-shirt.
Ladies, you can indulge in this trend too. The androgynous look has been sweeping the fashion world lately, and what better way to participate than rocking your own vest. Pair yours with your favorite V-neck shirt and colored skinny jeans. Try the urban grunge look by opting for a denim vest layered over a rock tank. Get creative and don’t be afraid to mix and match. Whether you live on the warm beaches of Southern California or trek through the windy blizzards of Chicago, a vest is always a brilliant addition to any outfit!
