STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Neon Jean How-To

Style Advice of the Week

Denim has been coming in all shades and patterns lately, so much that the concept of the “blue jean” has become a classic one. The neon jean trend is meant to be fun, and there are an incredible number of options for how to style a bright pair. This Fashionista took the trend, inspired by the house music scene that has recently exploded across pop culture, and made it her own by giving it a preppy, modern twist.

It’s a fairly common misconception that the only way to style a pair of bold bottoms is to offset it with a tame upper half. While this balancing act is certainly a good starting point, it is in no way where your limits should be set.

Instead of a solid (or sheer) shade of beige, try a solid button-down in a color equally as audacious as your denim—but stay away from pastels; rich colors such as this Fashionista’s cherry red or even a royal blue will provide enough contrast to allow the pieces to harmonize nicely. Her metallic shoe pulls the golden accents from her jewelry and lends pleasant pops of shine to the overall look.
Throwing on a pattern always adds interest to an outfit, so if you’re thinking about playing with prints, go for it! But try to stay within the rich color family I suggested earlier; pastel or neon hues will be too distracting. Also resist the temptation to pull a hint of your denim’s color into your pattern selection—since the main color of the outfit is such a showstopper alone, pulling that same color into separate areas runs the risk of becoming a bit of an eyesore. The simple, clean geometry of this alice + olivia printed top is a great accent for colored denim.

Carry your bright denim well into fall by slipping into a structured leather jacket, or keep a more sophisticated vibe with a cable knit sweater and a pair of riding boots.

Bright denim was made to stand out, so help your pair reach its full potential.
