I spent my weekend lifting heavy camera equipment and telling people to be quiet. That's right, I was on a film set working as a Production Assistant! The life of a PA is one of quick thinking and swift action, which got me thinking: how does one dress for a job that requires you to be active for several hours straight? This week's Fashionista is channeling the Production Assistant style that embodies comfort, durability and lightning-speed work.
The most important ingredient in successful PA style is a solid work boot. When you are on your feet for several hours at a time, you don't mess around with your choice of footwear. Sturdy boots are a must for those who are trekking through grass, mud and water to make sure everything on set goes according to plan. Lace-up leather boots are a great fashionable option that bridges the gap between utility and aesthetics. Take a page out of this Fashionista's book and try layering warm wool socks with your work boots for added warmth and padding.
Another key ingredient in PA style is the layered jacket. As all seasoned filmmakers know, the weather is always unpredictable on set and you have to be ready for anything. That's why having an extra jacket handy is a must. This Fashionista looks ready to jump into action with her track-style velvet jacket. It gives an extra layer of warmth without being too heavy and bogging her down while she is trying to get equipment set up. Plus, it adds some extra color to her ensemble.
Lastly, this Fashionista combines great style with great quality in a pair of denim skinny jeans. Her jeans keep her safe from the elements on set but also gives her look that great laid back style that young film students love. Investing in durable jeans is absolutely necessary when working “on the ground,” so to speak.
As we begin our summer breaks and go on to do fabulous internships and volunteer work, keep in mind that when working long hours you want to give your style the appropriate space to breathe and be comfortable; especially if you are working on any films this summer! The better dressed for action you are, the better quality work you can do. However, there are always ways to inject a little bit of added style, so don't be scared to add an accessory like printed socks or a graphic sweater here and there. Oh, and have fun! That's what working in new experiences and production is all about.
