My name is Kayla Young and I am a junior majoring in Public Relations and Sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University. I am excited to be a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. When you think of Richmond, Virginia, fashion may not be the first thing that comes to mind. Living in Richmond has made me change my opinion because Richmond is filled with people that have their own eclectic style and I love it. If I had to describe my style in one word I would use versatile. I like to explore different looks depending on how I feel. Some days I like to express my girly side while other days I go for a more comfortable street style look.
Ever since I was a child, fashion has always been a part of my life. When I was two years old I had a contract with a modeling agency in New York and even appeared in an ad. Growing up in New Jersey, I spent much time in New York. While I was there, my aunt would always take me shopping and make sure my wardrobe was up to date with the latest pieces from various designers. When I would go to the store with my mother I was constantly trying to convince her to buy me Cosmopolitan and Glamour Magazine. I loved looking at articles about what was trending in the makeup and fashion world.
Today, my style has evolved and I attribute it to my exposure to fashion at such a young age. Gwen Stefani, Solange Knowles and Victoria Beckham have been some of my biggest inspirations. I love their outfit choices and the risky pieces that they put together. Their range of looks is what gives them a unique style. I admire their ability to step outside of the box while remaining classy.
Fashion is forever changing so I stay updated with my favorite fashion blogs. It helps me gain ideas to play with looks and alter them to fit me. No matter what your style is it is essential to feel comfortable in what you are wearing. As a Fashionista it is important to own your look and be confident. What I love about fashion is its ability to allow you to express yourself. You get to choose your wardrobe and how you want to represent yourself.
My goal is to have a career in the fashion world. Ultimately, I would like to open my own public relations firm. This internship will allow me to have the opportunity to gain more exposure in the industry. I am constantly updating my blog and Twitter so check it out to keep up with what I am doing. I am looking forward to sharing my experience as a Style Guru with you and I hope you enjoy!
