Post-reading week always carries a certain weight of what’s to come for students. Queen’s students–from finals to impending goodbyes–take this final stretch of freedom to soak up all the cheer they can and make it to the end of the semester unscathed. On the walk home from class, in need of cheer, I spotted this Fashionisto, who brightened the days of those around him. Aside from his wonderful use of texture, flattering fit and versatile neutral palette, his smile and energy stood out as warmer than the already-gorgeous Kingston winter day. CollegeFashionista: Where is each piece from that you’re wearing?
Ryan DeGroot: The pants, sweater and peacoat are all from H&M. The scarf is from Le Chateau and the shoes are just generic Converse.
CF: How would you describe your personal style?
RD: It’s pretty much always fitted and neutral colours. It’s usually what I do. I have long, slender legs, but I don’t know what to do with them, so I find that’s what works best.
CF: What would you say is your number one style tip for university students?
RD: To be brave. There are some people who find a niche and wear variations of the same outfit every day. And then there are people who I really admire, who wear a different kind of outfit and pull it off every single time. If you can pull off the attitude, then you can pull off the outfit.
CF: On the flip-side of that coin, what should fashionable university students avoid?
RD: Avoid trying to be too flashy–overdoing it with colours and too many bulky accessories. You can be pretty neutral with all of your attire, yet have a couple of pinpoint things to attract people. For example, an awesome pair of earrings brings people right up to your face.
CF: What is the one item of clothing you can’t live without?
RD: It has to be this Christmas sweater. I walked into the store with my mom, when she was visiting, and she said, “I think I found it. This is for you.” I thought there was no way, but I put it on and thought, “This feels really nice.” She said it looked adorable, and moms don’t lie!
How To: Start with a neutral colour palette to recreate this look. This Fashionisto’s choice of navy, taupe and charcoal is universally flattering. Dress to flatter your body type; find fitted pieces that are tailored to your silhouette. Think classic pieces with interesting details, like his tweed scarf with violet accents or modernized Bill Cosby-esque sweater.
