STYLE GURU BIO: Kate Skow

Style Guru Bio

My name is Kate. You can call me Kate. I’m a junior Classical Civilization and International Relations double major at University of California, Davis. However, I hoard many other interests, fashion being one of them.

It all started on my fifth birthday, as these things do, when I was given a costume box. I’m still playing dress up in the real world today. I’m not a slave to fashion, but perhaps its live-in maid.

Of course, I went through many not-so fashionable periods in my life and we’ll just not talk about those, but now, I am pretty aware of who I am as both a person and a person with style. I think I am what would happen if a goth mall rat and an 80 year old crotchety professor got in a back alley fight that inexplicably turned into a one night stand at a Nirvana concert. If that wasn’t a giveaway, I’m really weird. (If you’re not entirely convinced, I’ve also been called “every Disney villain ever”).

So where does a goth-professor hybrid draw inspiration from? My top three style icons would definitely have to be Patsy Stone, Clarissa Darling and the Addams family (yes, the entire family). I also pull a lot from music. Just a sampling of favorite artists and bands that work their way into my sartorial choices are Bob Dylan, the Strokes, Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush, The Smiths, Talking Heads, The Cure, Azealia Banks, Enya, Blur, ABBA, Rihanna and One Direction. Nope. Not kidding.

My fashion, and really, life, philosophy comes from the great source of all knowledge, T.I.: “I’m the opposite of moderate, immaculately polished, with the spirit of a hustler, and the swagger of a college kid.”

I’m excited to be a Style Guru this spring and to tote my camera around Davis to capture the fashion-forward folks in its fields. If a girl in all black with almost more hair than face comes up to you, fear not! It’s just me, and I think you’re pretty stylish!
