FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Zoë Burch

Fashionista Spotlight
As if school were not hard enough, once again the weather in Kent has plotted against us. With sub-zero wind chills and unpredictable precipitation, a true Fashionista or Fashionisto must be ready to conquer any obstacle winter blows our way (literally!). As I spend my afternoons in the Hub people-watching, I notice that one tactic many Fashionistas have done to differentiate themselves is to resort to the contrasting colored jacket, boot or pant and just hope that the bright flash of neon pink among the winter pallete of dark shades will have people admiring their spunk. This week’s Fashionista didn’t have to do anything of the sort to catch my attention. She managed to do it using only neutrals!
Name: Zoë Burch
Major: Exploratory
Year: Freshman
CollegeFashionista: I adore the variety of warm items you’ve put together today! Can you tell me where you got these individual elements?
Zoë Burch: The hat is from Gabriel Brothers, along the Lucky Brand pants. Glasses are prescription Calvin Klein. The scarf is American Eagle Outfitters and the jacket is The North Face. My boots are from Burlington Coat Factory.

CF: Who or what inspires your style?

ZB: I frequent lookbook.nu, but most of my style can attribute to my mom. We both love classic pieces and neutral colors!

CF: Any fashion trends are you a fan of at the moment?

ZB: Collared button-downs. My collection started with an oversized button-down I stole from my brother, but now I have a closet full of them. I dig flower crowns and circlets, too.
CF: What is your ideal outfit this season?
ZB: Fleece lined tights, warm boots, a cute skirt and a comfy cardigan. I used to be adamant about not letting the cold dictate my outfits, but the long walks to class have sobered me a bit.
CF: Do you have a favorite winter weather item?

ZB: Warm, cute socks. I love peeking them out over the tops of my boots.
CF: What places do you recommend for the college student on a budget?
ZB: Gabriel Brothers is the best. My hat was about seven dollars and my Lucky Brand Jeans were 20. They have both designer and off-brands at great prices and it is by far my favorite place to shop.
How To: Zoë’s outfit is cozy and neutral; it works because of her minimal aesthetic. She had the right idea with the jacket by The North Face. I’ve yet to meet a person who says they aren’t warm while wearing a North Face jacket. I’d love to spot more people wearing boots that aren’t your typical dark brown or black. I feel that they’d transition better into spring than their darker counterparts. Her pants are of a velvety, corduroy texture that although unable to capture with a camera, I found these that are similar. A trapper hat is definitely one of the greatest winter fashion innovations, period. I liked this one from Urban Excess, a British fashion retailer. Finish with a dark knit scarf. And to those who wear glasses: bulky frames are in!
