LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS: Summer Denim

Let's Hear it for the Boys

When it’s hot, I’ve always felt options are somewhat limited. You either wear your underwear outside (not terribly practical) or you sweat it out in the lightest tee and short combination you can find. On this day, everyone was trying his or her very hardest to escape the heat as the mercury kept rising; denim was not the first fabric that sprang to mind in my own attempts to keep cool.

This Fashionisto has approached this summer clothing conundrum in a fresh way, though — a denim sleeveless shirt. I’d always though that this item of clothing was reserved for truckers, but I was proven sorely wrong when I saw how it had been teemed with starchy khaki shorts. Sometimes the best choice to make is the one you least expect to, and for me this is what this look is all about. Instead of choosing a plain button-down shirt or a tee with these shorts, this Fashionisto has chosen an oversized statement shirt with fun detailing around the shoulders. The light wash of the denim also keeps the look relaxed and summery.

The colour story in his look plays between grunge and preppy chic. His black tote, Vans, glasses and khaki shorts contrast with the pale shirt and its semi-kitsch patchwork detailing. It kind of makes me think of Dsquared2 and its spring 2010 ready-to-wear collection that channeled the urban happy camper in us all. This is referenced by little details like the neat cuff on his shorts that remind me of a Scout uniform.

Accessories tie everything together and are an easy way for anyone to create an outfit that’s both eclectic and slick. Using dark colours like black or brown often works really well because they create a blank canvas that you can work off. I love how this Fashionisto has used the solid black base, but built on it with bright colours and different fabrics.

Hint: Do not be afraid to experiment with colour! This Fashionisto has chosen fairly standard colours in men’s clothing but paired them together in an interesting way. Look out for fun detailing like patchwork or Aztec prints to keep your look up-to-date.
