LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS: Camel Craze

Let's Hear it for the Boys

Which animal is famous for the humps on its back and its ability to withstand the harsh conditions of the desert? If you answered ‘camel,’ then you are right! Here’s another: which color is both a designer and crowd favorite and has also made appearances in several menswear collections during Milan Fashion Week earlier this year? If you also answered ‘camel,’ then you are correct!

Within men’s fashion, camel coats have been developing a cult following since 2009. Just like the animal it was named after, the color camel has great endurance. Although the application of camel in menswear collections has been spotty in the past, this time around, camel is here to stay.

Today’s Fashionisto embodied class, yet at the same time, his outfit was very playful. Since black and navy are such standard colors for peacoats, his wearing of this gorgeous camel one was a pleasant rarity. He layered his mid-thigh coat over an outfit that was fit to welcome the springtime. To say the least, the colors were bright and welcoming. Without a scarf, his pink flannel shirt playfully peeked out from underneath the peacoat. I like to think it was symbolic of the flowers that are about to blossom. He paired the flannel with a pair of jeans, whose dark olive green color is reminiscent of foliage. With his nubuck desert boots, this Fashionisto really brought his camel back home.

To go along with the classic look, this Fashionisto opted for some classic accessories — bags and sunglasses. His camel messenger bag was definitely an edgy choice because outfits that are too matchy-matchy have a high potential of being devastating. Despite that, this Fashionisto made it work. He finished his ensemble with a pair of tortoiseshell clubmaster sunnies. The synergy between his garments and his accessories was brilliant.

Infuse your own wardrobe with camel. A good start would be these camel suede wingtips from J.Crew. And no one knows camel better than Burberry. Their classic cashmere check scarf will remain a classic, and this camel trench coat will surely catch people’s eyes.

Hint: This Fashionisto took every approach possible. He layered his camel peacoat over a bright top, he wore it with a contrasting dark bottom and he even did camel-on-camel. Since camel is such a complementary tone, you can pretty much pair it with anything and not go wrong.
