Alexander Wang does it, Phillip Lim does it and Erin Wasson embodies it. We’re talking about urban downtown style, where a dark color palette and ultra-cool pieces reign supreme. With a penchant for drapey silhouettes, loose fits, and all things black and leather, the downtown dresser fearlessly rules the concrete jungle as his/her stomping ground. I spotted this Fashionista in an undeniably urban look that’s polished in all the right ways.
Name: Taryn Tavormina
Major: Fashion Merchandising Management
Year: Freshman
CollegeFashionista: Where did you get the pieces in your outfit?
Taryn Tavormina: My scarf, tank, blazer and belt are all from Aritzia. The coat, bag and booties are Zara, and the pants are Free People.
CF: How would you define your personal style?
TT: I would probably say eclectic. I can be semi-soft grunge one day and then minimal the next. I just like piecing the different aspects of a look together.
CF: Your style is a mix of characteristics that are on opposite sides of the style spectrum regarding color and silhouette. What inspires you when you dress in the morning?
TT: Everything! I check a bunch of random blogs—Rumi Neely of Fashion Toast and Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller will forever be my top two—but I’d say the streets of New York are my biggest influencer. That, or Style.com.
CF: This outfit is a fantastic example of a light, grungy look! On the other hand, what would a minimal outfit of yours look like?
TT: My minimal always starts with skinny jeans—usually black and occasionally high-waisted. I’ll throw on a solid T-shirt with a blazer or a light jacket of sorts and a black ankle boot to finish it all.
CF: The pocket detailing and fit of those pants is absolutely amazing. Can you recommend how a Fashionista could dress them up?
TT: I would do some sort of silk blouse, perhaps a solid button-down or even a camisole, and then add a layer of chic with a fitted blazer or sweater. For footwear, it would definitely be a more delicate shoe, preferably something with a thin ankle strap and a pointed toe.
CF: The bag and the scarf really pull your outfit together, what are your other go-to accessories?
TT: Those two are easily my favorites, but necklaces are close to follow. I love layering a nice statement necklace with a few simpler ones on top.
How To: Get the ultimate downtown look by starting with a pair of loose-fit bottoms like light-wash boyfriend jeans or this pair of cargo pants. Add an oversized tee or tank and wear a structured coat over it, accessorizing with a printed scarf, heeled ankle boots and a leather satchel.
