Anna Wintour once said, “If you look at any great fashion photograph out of context, it will tell you just as much about what’s going on in the world as a headline in The New York Times.” Fashion is just as much a current event as anything else, visually describing the world we live in. Just like writing, painting or creating music, fashion is an art form that requires creativity, yet it is so boundless that anyone can make a fashion statement with their signature style.
As my second term on the CollegeFashionista team, I have learned a lot about people through their style. I have sharpened my critical eye for fashion noticing just how much effort goes into creating the perfect outfit. That perfect outfit can look so effortless, however contriving it is not necessarily the case: picking the right accessories and determining if those accessories are the focus or the background of the outfit, deciding to dress up or dress down a skirt and boots or even choosing between a leather jacket and a jean jacket. There are so many options to make a look come together, it’s just deciding what that look will be. While a leather jacket screams rough and tough, a jean jacket brings out a preppier side that is always fun to explore. Fashion is not just a one-way street and has so many extensive outlets to sample.
For me, I love dressing depending on my mood. When the sun is shining and I just want to smile, I gravitate toward my white lace a-line skirt and a feminine top. When I’m feeling a little lazy, I love wearing a rocker tee and my softest infinite scarf. Some may define my style as the ultimate girly girl, but I don’t like to label because my style is constantly evolving. While a few months back I was consistently attracted to anything chiffon with a floral print, I now find myself eyeing leather skirts and stud embellishments. If there’s one thing for certain, I do try to look for things that I don’t own in order to expand my wardrobe with variety.
I say, if you have to wear clothes, why not have fun doing it? It’s just as easy to rock a great pair of jeans as it is sweatpants, so mix up your look everyday and try something new. Whether that be wearing a hat for the first time or mixing different types of prints, there is always a way to create a new look. And, you never know, maybe your newfound fashion inspiration will catch my eye, and, you too, will be the next Fashionista or Fashionisto to grace the STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK column.
