IN HER SPACE: Whitney and Amanda Fox, Remodo

Decorating your first living space after graduation is something that everyone looks forward to, but dreads. You want to find that perfect medium between “grown-up” decor and fresh trends that won’t leave you bored upon entry. On top of that, there are so many places to shop—where do you even begin? Familiar with the post-grad decorating struggle, the Remodo sisters have created a one-stop shopping website dedicated to helping you vamp up your room.

Incorporating professionalism and personality at home is what the Remodo sisters are all about. Whether their space is in a living room or traveling on a vintage Airsteam as a showroom, these sisters will help completely tailor your room, to fit your budget and with styles you are bound to adore.

CollegeDormista: How would you describe your own personal decor style?

Whitney + Amanda: Both of us are drawn to clean lines and spaces that have a bit of a contemporary feel but we style them differently. We both love black and white. Whitney is drawn to spaces with metallic accents while Amanda loves navy and pops of color. She is huge believer that your walls are an extension of your personality.

CD: What catches your eye when you enter a person’s space?

W+A: We tend to look at the layout of furniture, whether the space flows and has been maximized (especially in NYC) color selections and styling of decorative objects.  We also notice whether it is organized and clean as we tend to be neat freaks.  Most importantly, we look for personality and whether or not the spaces evokes individuality.

CD: Does your fashion style mirror your decor style?

W+A: Absolutely! You should try to style your space just as you would style yourself. Think of your room as an extension of your closet – a space to show your personality.  Living in New York City, we are constantly blown away by the creativity that surrounds us and we love exploring new fashions and design aesthetics.

CD: Do you feel your space decor plays a key role in your energy and attitude?

W+A: Yes, we are firm believers that the space you are living in has a direct impact on your energy and attitude. Your home should be a sanctuary of sorts. We live in a world where people are constantly bombarded with emails, phone calls, texts, social media and more. We believe that it is important to have a place where you can come home, relax and take a break from it all. Little things can make a huge difference such as good lighting, the right wall color, and even fresh flowers.

CD: Do you find that growing up in different locations has had an effect on your decor style?

W+A: Definitely. Living in so many places helped us create the concept for Remodo. As young adults, we were able to make mistakes and push the envelope with our style of the moment in our rooms. We have tried to take a piece of each place with us, which has created our colorful, curated aesthetic. We also have drawn a tremendous amount of inspiration from traveling. We love exploring new cultures and identifying what makes each place unique.

CD: If you could change or update one thing in your apartment right now, regardless of cost, what would it be and why?

A: To be completely honest, I would create more walls and open up the kitchen. I absolutely love my studio but sometimes you crave having separate spaces.

W: I would create more natural light by opening up the windows in my apartment.

CD: What has been the most rewarding experience since creating Remodo?

W+A: Helping clients create a space they love. Whether we are helping with pillows and bedding or transforming a whole room, making our clients smile at the end of the day is an amazing feeling. Starting Remodo has been an amazing journey. We have learned so much from each person and cannot wait to meet more!
