If “GIRLS” Starred College Fashionistas

Recently, I have had the feeling that something is missing in my life. When this weekend came and went, I realized exactly what that “something” was. I am missing my GIRLS—the show that is. Season four just ended and now I have to wait months to be reunited with my (and every twenty-something’s) scripted BFFs.

There hasn’t been a series in recent memory where after nearly episode I find myself questioning, “Ummm, are you sure this isn’t a show about my life?” (Cue the classic scene of Hannah’s solo dance party to Robyn. Been there, done that. Literally.)

Besides Lena Dunham’s exceptional writing, part of what makes these characters so relatable is their wardrobes. You can watch the show and literally see pieces from your own closet or Anthropologie sale section. From Jessa’s vintage glam to Shoshanna’s trendy feminine looks, there’s a little bit of GIRLS in all of us.

To hold you over until you are reunited with your imaginary besties in season five, here are some CollegeFashionista Style Gurus who are harnessing their inner-GIRLS. Find out where your style falls on the spectrum of Hannah to Marnie.

Hannah

Hannahs are unexpected—both in the way they live their lives and the way they dress. Floral with plaid? Why not! Booties with a feminine dress? That’s a winning-Hannah combo. Hannahs have also never met a cardigan they didn’t like. If you love to experiment with fashion and don’t care to apologize for that, then you are a Hannah through and through.

Jessa

If you look up the word “bohemian” in the dictionary, I am pretty sure just a picture of Jessa is listed. Jessas understand how to make vintage new again. Everything from silk kimonos to high-waisted jeans (and often at the same time) are Jessa staples. Everyday is a “pants-optional” day in the life of a Jessa. If your closet looks like a well-curated thrift store, you’re a Jessa, darling.

Shoshanna

Two things are important to every Shoshanna: color and a great accessory. You know what’s better than a necklace for a Shoshanna? A huge necklace. Shoshannas follow trends and then put their own feminine (and often over-the-top) spin on them. Don’t forget perfectly manicured hair. If your friends wonder if you even own a pair of jeans or anything in black, then Shoshanna is your style spirit animal.

Marnie

Whether working at an art gallery or aspiring to be a folk artist, Marnies are all about committing to something and letting their style reflect that choice. From owning the young professional look to going totally ’80s bohemian, Marnies know how to dress for a situation while still making the look totally their own. If you own more sheath dresses than you can count, consider changing your day job to a “Marnie.”
