Here’s Why You Should Go On a Digital Detox

When was the last time you were away from your phone or the internet for 24 hours? Yeah, I can’t remember either. It’s hard to get away from all things digital because nowadays it feels like everything is happening online. The fear of missing out online is real and can be hard to overcome. I get it. You’re not alone. While the idea of a digital detox might sound daunting, here’s why you should do it anyway.

You’ll feel less stressed. By taking a temporary step back from using the internet, you’ll automatically feel less pressure to keep up. Give yourself permission to take a short break from all the constant posts. Take the chance to recharge your mind. When you’re ready to jump back in, you’ll have a clearer head and a fresher perspective.

You can really be present with the people you’re with. I think we can all agree that having a phone out at the dinner table is a major conversation killer. It’s distracting and not to mention rude. Going on a digital detox gives you the chance to really be present with the people you’re with. Use this break to make some time and space for some real conversations.

You’ll sleep better. I’ll admit that I almost always have my phone out underneath the covers before I’m going to sleep. There have been plenty of studies talking about how our phones are keeping us up at night, so instead of using your electronic device to wind down, read a good book. You’ll find that your sleep will become more restful.

There’s time to do other things you love. There are so many things to do when you’re not online: dancing, swimming, cooking something yummy in your dorm room, or seeing some nature. A digital detox is the perfect excuse to experience and do other things. The digital world will be there when you get back, but for now, do the things you love that don’t involve using the internet.

The whole point of a digital detox is to get away from the virtual and be present in reality. Go for a walk, hang out with some friends at the beach, talk to your family, or indulge in some quality time to yourself. I’m all about having an online presence, but it can get overwhelming sometimes, so a detox is the perfect way to find some balance in your everyday life. A 24-hour digital detox might sound rough, but you might just find that it’s the break you’ve been needing.
