On most college campuses around the country, Fashionistas have already broken out their full-fledged fall wardrobes. At the University of Miami, however, we don't need to get our puffy jackets out of storage just yet. (Or ever.) But that doesn't mean that change isn't in the air!
Every mid to late October, we finally get a little bit of relief from the extreme heat and humidity that we've grown tired of. I know it sounds ridiculous to complain about 90 degree temperatures when frost is covering the ground just a plane ride away, but sweltering temperatures can take a toll on more than just your wardrobe.
Seasonal change in Miami isn't usually well defined, and certainly isn't drastic. It can be hard to figure out what's approrpriate when the person to your left is in a bathing suit and coverup (probably from the Northeast) while the person to your right is in boots and a scarf (probably a Floridian). That's why this week's Fashionista should get a standing ovation.
Junior Chelsea Irizarry found a cute compromise with a muted chiffon blouse and pastel green corduroys. Her top is sheer and light enough to allow some breathability, while the long sleeve style breaks up the monotony that is the tank top. The collar literally shines with intricate beadwork. Her skinny cords are a Miami-friendly shade of green but are toned down enough to provide a transition into the cooler days. This Fashionista finishes the look with neutral TOMS—a big step up from flip flops, but not as heavy and warm as a boot. Her hair is pulled back in a bun; versatile enough to handle humidity or wind, depending what Mother Nature decides to throw our way.
