FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: Eric Chao

Fashionisto Spotlight

Happy Spring Fling Week to all those at Penn. Welcome to a week of Tiesto, Passion Pit, spring sunshine and debauchery! Dressed impeccably in a casual, light patterned button-down, dark rinse jeans, chunky boots and stunner shades, Fashionisto Eric Chao shows us his go-to methods for throwing on great outfits in no time at all — absolutely perfect for #Fling.

Name: Eric Chao

Major: Finance

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?

Eric Chao: Diesel boots, Izzue (a British-style brand that began in Hong Kong) pants, Zara slim fit plaid shirt and Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses.

CF: When you wake up in the morning, what’s one outfit that you can throw on and know that you will look good?

EC: A fitted, plaid button-down, dark slim jeans and my black Puma slip-ons. You can never go wrong with a plaid shirt that is in the correct size; it gives you a good balance between formality and casualness.

CF: How would you characterize your style?

EC: I would say that my style is quite eclectic — it varies from day to day. One day I might be wearing some casual sports clothes while rocking my Jordan’s, other days I’ll wear a nice, fitted plain polo shirt or a button-down with some nicer jeans. I’m also somewhat concerned about the details. I like to wear accessories like rings or a dog tag necklace just to add some variety to my outfits.

CF: Where are your favorite places to shop?

EC: I love shopping at Diesel when the season is changing. Some of their jeans and shirts are definitely fashionable and comfortable but over-priced during the season. However, there’s usually a huge mark down at the end of each season, which makes their prices much friendlier. Zara is a great place to shop, too. I especially enjoy window shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue, Emporio Armani, Tod’s and other fancy designer stores despite their ridiculous prices. It’s always a positive motivation for a college student like me to work hard and become successful.

CF: Who is a celebrity you consider to be one of your style icons and why?

EC: There isn’t any particular celebrity whom I would consider to be my style icon. I would say that I have learned the most about style and fashion just from observing what people wear on the street and by browsing some fashion magazines. If you see some particular accessory or a piece or garment that catches your eye, try it on next time.

How to: Accessorize appropriately as a guy. Throw on a pair of big, chunky boots, some thick rings and a pair of cool aviator sunglasses and you’re good to go.
