Sochi, here we come! Today the Winter Olympics will kick off, and the world will turn its eyes to Russia and all of the athletes competing for their respective countries. Sports have been an integral part of my life pretty much since I was born. Being able to blend two things I love, fashion and athletics, is always something that I enjoy and take an interest in!
Although the two sports that have been a major part of my life, tennis and volleyball, aren’t exactly winter sports, I still have huge appreciation for the skills of the Sochi athletes and the expertise they have in their sports. I have played volleyball since I was 10 and tennis since I was 11, but before that I was all about soccer. However, when I discovered these two sports, my interest in soccer waned and all I wanted to do was play volleyball and tennis non-stop!
During my volleyball career, I traveled all throughout the United States competing at the highest levels and representing both the state of North Carolina and the US itself at international tournaments. This resulted in me getting scouted by numerous universities to play varsity level volleyball, but in the end I chose to pursue my education at Chapel Hill and play at the club volleyball level instead. As for tennis, I played varsity all throughout high school and helped my team to win four consecutive state championship titles (go Crusaders!) and played USTA tournaments constantly. Now I currently play at the club level for tennis as well. Both of these sports have made an indelible impact upon my character, and I think had a massive effect on who I am today!
Oftentimes people think that fashion and sports don’t necessarily go hand in hand, but I have to disagree on this one, especially in my case. For volleyball, my teammates and I would always get incredibly involved in creating our uniforms to fit the unique style of my team and make them our own. As for tennis, style is practically everywhere! Since you don’t have the restrictions of having to wear a uniform, you have the luxury of going with whatever you personally want to wear on the courts. This allowed me to experiment with all kinds of athletic brands and styles – my two favorites for tennis being Lacoste for clothes and Adidas for shoes – and develop an athletic style all my own!
I’m incredibly excited for Sochi mostly because what we are going to see are sports that I am almost completely unfamiliar with! It’s not everyday that we get to see the best figure skaters, lugers, snowboarders, or skiers in the world compete for their countries and strive to beat one another. However, a different part of the Olympics that I always get excited for is the Ralph Lauren Olympic Collection! And of course, this year they did not disappoint.
