The Gingham Trend Everyone Is Wearing this Summer

Having just graduated from the College of Charleston, I now begin a new chapter of my life. As I begin to say goodbye to this beautiful city I called home the past four years, I start on my new journey as a Style Guru.  During my final weeks in Charleston, I have seen a trend popping up again all over King Street: gingham.

You may have seen this hot print in storefronts, on celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Emily Ratajkowski, or on the runway such as in Carolina Herrera’s S/S 17 collection.  Gingham is certainly making its way back; however, it’s not a new print to fashion.  Brigitte Bardot made this print famous with her pink gingham wedding dress in 1959.  Gingham became popular ever since, and has experienced cycles of popularity.  After seeing several of my favorite fashion bloggers rocking this eye-catching print this season, I decided to give it a go.

I immediately fell in love with this print, and how easily I could mix it into my wardrobe. For this outfit, I chose an off-the-shoulder gingham top.  The best part about this top is that it has matching shorts, and can be worn together or with other pieces from your closet. I’ve noticed that other stores such as Zara also have matching gingham tops and bottoms, which allows you to wear the pieces together or play with them individually.

I chose to wear this gingham top with another hot trend this season: two-tone jeans.  The jeans I’m wearing are the Pieced Mid Rise Raw Hem Rigid Girlfriend Jean from Express.  I’m also wearing a pair of black slides with this look, which are the perfect go-to sandal for spring and summer.  To accessorize my look, I’m wearing the popular Ray-Ban Round Metal sunglasses in gold and green with a horn choker from Free People.

Another reason I love gingham is that you can take the print from day to night.  Here I am wearing a faux suede moto jacket from Forever 21. This takes my look from a casual day stroll to dinner with friends. I chose this muted green jacket to make the outfit more edgy, and show the versatility of the gingham print.  Gingham can often portray a look of gentleness such as Dorothy’s blue gingham dress in The Wizard of Oz, but pairing a moto jacket or any piece that represents your personal style can make the print work for you.  Gingham is available in several pieces including tops, shorts, skirts, pants, and more, making it easy to find a piece true to your style.  I encourage trying out this print and giving it your own personal flair.  Have fun with it, Fashionistas!
