Any good designer knows that inspiration is the key to the creation of something beautiful. Today’s designers seem to be increasingly inspired by modern architecture. Sleek geometric cut outs, structured silhouettes and strategically placed metallic panels can be seen all across ready-to-wear runways. However we can’t forget that one of the most classic forms of inspiration comes from mother nature herself. Some of the most renowned works of art have depicted the timeless beauty of nature, and more specifically of flowers. Even in a fashion world that strives to be increasingly avant-garde, the use of flowers as inspiration has persisted. In fact, Christian Dior took floral inspiration quite literally in the fall 2010 haute couture collection. But have no fear Fashionistas, there is a more subtle alternative.
The flower of the week is the tulip, because it’s the inspiration behind the tulip skirt. The tulip skirt is not new to the world of fashion, but this Fashionista’s take on the trend gives it a very modern look. The tulip skirt trademark is that it looks like a wrap skirt, with a crossover at the front. This Fashionista opted for a sheer tulip skirt with a solid-colored lining underneath. The sheer and light-weight fabric gives the skirt just the right amount of shape and flow, while keeping with this summer’s sheer slip trend for dresses and skirts.
For you print-lovers, opt for this pleated skirt from Urban Outfitters. For a bigger high-low hem difference, I love this longer Oxford Circus design. For a bit of floral inception (floral print within a flower-inspired skirt), this version by Double Zero is super chic. To maintain an overall flowy look, pair your tulip skirt with a loose tank or crop top, like this Fashionista did. For an extra dose of dressy, feel free to pair it with a cropped chiffon blouse that contrasts the color of the skirt. I love how this Fashionista chose accessories with soft-neutral colors, but still added an extra pop of metallic navy blue nail polish to complement the color of her skirt.
This summer, let the beauty of the world around you be your fashion inspiration. Add a sheer tulip skirt to your closet and you’ll be sure to look pretty as a flower.
