Many of us walk through the downtown cores of our cities on a daily basis without giving a single thought to how amazing the concept of the concrete jungle really is. Although the idea of cities nowadays seems completely normal, rewind back less than 300 years and you would be trading in your Oscar de la Renta for overalls and your Chanel for a shovel. The not so ancient past of North America was characterized by rural farming communities until sometime between the eighteenth and nineteenth century when the industrial revolution occurred. This revolution brought incredible advances in agriculture, technology, manufacturing and just about any field of work that you can imagine. What was most defining about this revolution was that it marked the turning point which allowed the creation of what is now called urban society. Fast-forward to the present and these cities, once renowned for their suffocating smokestacks, have now evolved into an architectural mosaic of skyscrapers. Perhaps even more remarkable than the architectural mosaic is the cultural mosaic that is painted upon the sidewalks of a city by its residents. Few, if any, forms of expression capture the individuality of a city better than the styles that one sees on its streets.
This week’s Fashionisto created an ensemble that seamlessly incorporates four distinct styles into a mosaic that tells a tale of Montreal. Although each of these four styles can be seen worn on different individuals, it’s remarkably refreshing to see a Fashionisto who was able to merge them together so well. The story starts with his denim jacket — a rocker-inspired piece that's embraced by even the most preppy Fashionistos due to its versatility. Continue to his undone flannel button-up and you see an individual who likes to keep a casual style that contrasts the stressful energy of downtown life. However the edge and easiness of this Fashionisto’s waist-up look is visibly divergent from the tailored trends of his waist-down look. The military green denim pants he's sporting add an element of structure and seriousness to his outfit, yet they achieve this without looking too overdone or formal. Take note gentlemen, a pair of well-fitting jeans in an earthy color tone are a wardrobe must-have for this fall. This sartorial story ends with a pair of suede Oxford shoes, through which this Fashionstio channels the effortless elegance that Montreal and its residents are renowned for.
This fall take a moment to appreciate the beauty of your city, wherever it may be. Allow its diversity and contrast to inspire your sartorial choices so that you can create an equally contrasted urban mosaic of trends.
