Five Fashion-Forward Female Characters Who Inspire Greatness

Whether we like to admit it or not, the worlds of film and TV shows are the perfect escape from our daily routines and social constructs. I am a lover of both and sometimes, maybe a little too much, I plead guilty to a Netflix binge.

There is something about a storyline and character that is always so captivating. We know it is all fiction, yet we find ourselves warped and invested. Why you may ask? Maybe it has to deal with the fact that some characters inspire and empower us. Some teach us how to defend and stand up for ourselves; others teach us how to keep trying and never give up. And, well, sometimes a character just makes us laugh even if it’s just for an hour or two.

Let’s not forget that some of these characters also have a pretty rad sense of style, too. Through what each character wears, we slowly discover who they are and who they end up becoming. What we wear says a lot about who we are. So whether they are in some killer costume, elegant dress or just a plain white T-shirt and jeans, we learn a bit about who they are and what makes them so great.

While there are a plethora of leading ladies with serious style, I have narrowed it down to my list of five fashion-forward female characters who inspire greatness.

Gretta, played by Kiera Knightley in Begin Again: She is troubled by heartache and has a love for music. She is a driven and intelligent woman who keeps moving forward and through her menswear-inspired and boho-chic style you can see her persevere.

Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone in The Amazing Spiderman: An intelligent young student who knows what she wants in life and let’s no one make choices for her. Her feminine chic style and geeky charm shows her independence and strong will.

Mary Margaret Blanchard, played by Ginnifer Goodwin in Once Upon a Time: Torn between two realms, reality and a fantasy land, she is the epitome of never giving up and seeing the best in everyone. Her mod and delicate style shows her selfless and caring persona.

Felicity Smoak, played by Emily Bett Rickards in Arrow: A brilliant mind and tech wiz. This girl is more than just a pretty face and your typical cliché. Her flirty, playful and professional attire shows her determination and that she can do just about anything.

Olivia Pope, played by Kerry Washington in Scandal: I think no list of powerful TV heroines is complete without Olivia Pope. Her ability to command attention and seemingly run the world, all while toting a variety of Prada bags and wrap coats has the word “icon” written all over it.

We are constantly growing and trying to decide what character we want to play in life. We all strive for greatness and if these characters can inspire us a little, I think life will always be a little sweeter.
