Casual style and fashion is often open to wide interpretation. While some think well-fitting jeans and a T-shirt fit the bill, others feel more comfortable in a designer dress and flats. More and more, casual fashion is incorporating an unexpected accessory — sneakers. Celebrities from Sarah Jessica Parker to Rihanna have been spotted pairing a classic Converse shoes with a variety of different outfits. When I spotted this Fashionista on campus wearing a white pair of Chuck Taylor’s with cute patterned pants and a sweater, I was immediately appreciative of her unique spin on a current trend.
Name: Hannah Crane
CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style?
Hannah Crane: Eclectic. I love the British high street, but I like to mix and match with vintage and more unusual pieces. I’ve always been a bit tomboyish, so anything I can throw together really!
CF: What item in your wardrobe do you wear the most?
HC: My white Converse; I wear them almost everyday and put them with everything – jeans, dresses, skirts etc.
CF: What do you think is the most important item of clothing to have here in Utrecht?
HC: Scarves; they see you through when the weather here changes all the time. They can keep you cosy in winter or keep you warm when it’s not quite hot enough to just wear a jumper. Plus, they add a bit of colour and pretty to an outfit.
CF: Do you have any fashion icons or anything/anyone that inspires the way you dress?
HC: I like ’60s hippy style with the long skirts and tons of colour, but my style icon is probably my sister, as she always looks lovely. She is the best person to go shopping with because she knows what will look good!
How To: To obtain this Fashionista’s look, you have to invest in a good pair of Converse sneakers. There are endless styles and colors, but for a classy, versatile pair of Chuck’s, I would suggest going for the white, shoreline version of the sneaker. To complete the look, add a sweater. This striped version from ASOS would work well with a neutral pair of pants and the white Converse. To top the outfit off, search for a colorful scarf, like this one from Anthropologie.
