I’ve known this Fashionisto since he was running around my house in a Superman cape—and I can definitely say his style has come a long way. My older brother goes to school in Philadelphia but recently was employed in New York City and I have watched his style grow tremendously. While I used to find him in youthful, sort of hipster clothes, I now see him walking the streets of Manhattan in high quality brands such as J.Crew, Banana Republic and Brooks Brothers.
Name: Vinny Rama
Major: Business Management
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing right now?
Vinny Rama: My collared shirt is Polo Ralph Lauren, the shoes are Vans and I grabbed these shorts at Urban Outfitters.
CF: What wardrobe staple can you never imagine living without?
VR: I’m going to have to go with my Dockers Khaki Pants because I get a lot of use out of them. I can easily wear them to work and look professional, but they are also casual enough to hit happy hour.
CF: Where do you usually shop and why?
VR: If I’m looking for casual clothes like graphic tees or sneakers I would go to Urban Outfitters. They have some pretty good designers and their prices fit well into a tight budget. If I’m looking for more expensive pieces to wear to work or out on the weekends, I head to J.Crew.
CF: How has your style been affected by your changing environment?
VR: Working in New York City has definitely changed what I choose to wear. My style has cleaned up and I now gravitate towards more mature clothes. I’ve noticed the gap between the clothes I wear to look sharp and professional at work and the clothes I wear when I go out with friends has narrowed with age and my experiences.
How To: First of all, my brother may have a great job, but he is certainly not made of money. Like most college students, he cannot always pay full price for the styles he desires but there is definitely a solution. He spends his shopping days at outlet stores and even thrift stores and swears he has been successful in finding all the brands he loves at unbelievable discounts. The look I caught him in today is a perfect blend of this Fashionisto’s old and new taste: the outfit is sharp and put-together, yet he incorporates bright pastels to keep his look youthful and fun. So take a little advice from my brother and hit your nearest Ralph Lauren outlet and grab a polo that will transition with your complicated class-to-career lifestyle.
