At Davis where it’s summer three-quarters of the year and the majority of the student population bikes to class, it’s no wonder the overall consensus is that comfort trumps style, which is evident especially for the boys. Anyone can see that the unsaid campus-wide dress code for guys is a very laid-back look of basketball shorts and T-shirts, which is why I was very surprised (and impressed!) to see this Fashionisto making a bold statement with his burgundy pants and what appeared to be a polka-dot print shirt. (Looking closely you can actually see that they’re little stars!)
Name: Sharif Elrefaie
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?
Sharif Elrefaie: I am wearing a pair of maroon jeans and a short sleeve button-down, both from H&M, and my favorite pair of comfortable Nikes. To top it off, I’m sporting a pair of new Wayfarer Ray-Ban sunglasses.
CF: What inspired your look/where do you get style inspiration?
SE: I don’t know about inspiration but I like to trust the opinions of close ones about my clothing. My girlfriend suggested the button-down and I liked it so I ended up buying it. As for jeans, I really enjoy different colors than the standard blue jeans. Other than that, my inspiration also comes from a lot of the shopping sites I visit (JackThreads, Urban Outfitters, PLNDR).
CF: What pieces do you consider to be most important in an outfit?
SE: Shirts and shoes. I believe that a shirt gives off a good first impression in terms of style. A good pair of shoes leaves a lasting impression as you’re looking at the person’s outfit.
CF: What is next on your shopping list?
SE: Hopefully a pair of Jordans!
How to: Make a bold statement like this Fashionisto with a pair of slim-fitting colored pants (darker colors like what he is wearing are the most versatile and work best), but if maroon is not your color, these H&M chinos come in a number of happy hues! Pair it with a button-down in a neutral navy blue color, which will contrast nicely (rather than clash) with whatever color pants you choose. Add a little more intrigue by choosing a button-down with a subtle print, like this J.Crew number and voilà! You’ve got the perfect fall outfit for school!
