Fashionisto Spotlight

The best thing about talking to Fashionistas/os on the street is that with each person I learn something new about fashion. I love finding out what makes these stylish college students tick. When it comes to Fashionistos, I am more intrigued by men’s fashion with every guy I interview. This week I learned that the little things make a guy’s wardrobe edgy and different from the masses. This week’s Fashionisto adds a touch of camo print to his outfit for a small but noticeable detail located on his socks peeking through his skinny jeans.

One thing that all college students want to make sure to do is dress within the requirements of business casual while at their internships. Considering this Fashionisto’s experience in the industry working at Maxim magazine, I made sure to pick his brain on how to dress appropriately in an office setting. It’s important to look the part but also survey how others are dressing and go from there. His advice: “Don’t wear jeans to a black-tie event.” Got it.

Name: Patrick J. Ward

Major: Advertising and Graphic Design

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?

Patrick J. Ward: Black oxford boots, Richer Poorer camo print socks, black Levi’s Brand Jeans, Fruit of the Loom white T-shirt, H&M varsity jacket windbreaker, Coach bracelet and Skagen watch.

CollegeFashionista: When did you become interested in fashion?

PW: I’ve always been interested in it. I learned how to match clothes in kindergarten. I would say the end of my junior year of high school I started to pay attention to what I wore. My first exciting fashion moment was wearing a black leather jacket, which could be considered as my gateway to fashion.

CollegeFashionista: Do you have any advice for students and dressing appropriately in the office and at their internships?

PW: I work in a very casual office (at Maxim magazine). My advice is that you can never be overdressed but you can be underdressed. Once I wore a similar outfit that I’m wearing now to a black-tie event. Everyone was staring at me! I didn’t know the dress code.

CollegeFashionista: What is your style inspiration lately?

PW: Vintage classic actors like James Dean and other bad boys. Also Justin Bobby from MTV’s The Hills. At first I thought he looked homeless but it was a good look and grew on me! He definitely knew what he was doing.

How To: Create your own James Dean laid back look that can be tailored to the ladies or the gents. Start with classic black skinny jeans as the foundation. For a guy, wear a crisp white T-shirt, or any color of your choice, and a varsity jacket with a relaxed fit. For a girl, wear a V-neck or tank top that fits closer to the body for a flirty look and a varsity jacket that is a size larger than you would wear. Finish the look with combat boots or oxfords that are perfect transitions for the fall and some crazy socks!
