Fashionisto Spotlight

To the guys out there: while it might have been okay for your mother to buy you clothes throughout your middle school and high school years, college is about the right time to start buying clothes –that includes coats down to shoes—for yourself. Why, you may ask? Because as college is the time where people discover who they are, college allows the independence to express oneself, starting with the most powerful form of expression: apparel. Discovering one’s own style and dressing how one wants to dress offers confidence and class. While putting effort into the way you dress might take a little more work than throwing on a sports team t-shirt and basketball shorts, having a sense of style exudes sophistication. To get started on figuring out your personal style, read on to learn about this cool Fashionisto’s style.

Name: Lucas Welker

Major: Undecided

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?

Lucas Welker: I am wearing a red flannel shirt, a crème colored cardigan from H&M, Levi’s 511 jeans, TOMS boots and a Levi’s denim jacket.

CF: How would you describe your personal style?

LW: I prefer to wear clothing that I find comfortable but would also be presentable for any occasion. Menswear allows for little variety but working within those limitations can result in interesting combinations. My style can be seen as urban but is also just fitting for day to day on and off campus.

CF: Not every guy cares to put effort into the way they dress. What influences you to put effort into your style?

LW: One of the biggest motivators to my style is the ability to like what I wear. This brings a certain level of personal satisfaction but also confidence. I’ve always enjoyed being conscious of what I wear and as a young adult I feel it is a simple representation of how I view myself.

CF: What would you say is your favorite menswear item?

LW: My favorite item would be a jacket or coat. The right jacket can tie an outfit together, and throwing one on completes a look by adding a final layer. It can change a look, therefore making it a unique item.

How To: With the constantly fluctuating weather, this Fashionisto correctly used the technique of layering with pieces all appropriate for the still-transitioning seasons. A cardigan is the perfect piece of outerwear for the warming winter months. Check out these cotton cardigans from H&M similar to this Fashionisto’s cardigan he layered over his flannel. Like this Fashionisto said, a jacket or coat as the top layer can change a look. For a classic feel, try this Levi’s denim jacket from Urban Outfitters similar to this Fashionisto’s jacket. For an urban style, opt for a varsity jacket or bomber jacket like this navy bomber from Topman. Also on trend for men are field jackets. This army green colored field jacket by OBEY is a great pick for street style. To truly complete the outfit, slip on canvas mid-top TOMS or canvas Sperry Top-Siders oxford boots beneath a classic pair of Levi Brand jeans and you are good to go!
