This week’s Fashionisto combines comfort with color play to create a layered look you’re bound to love. Graduate student Kevin Fitzgerald says being comfortable in one’s clothing is extremely important. And although we often see wearability sacrificed for the sake of stylishness, this Fashionisto manages to hit the sweet spot between practicality and panache.
Pairing steel blue denim with a deep maroon sweater, Kevin mixes warm and cool colors effortlessly. Finished with a coordinating blazer and shoe combination, this Fashionisto’s earthy accessories not only add a pinch of personality to the look, but they also create the ultimate winter palette.
Name: Kevin Fitzgerald
Year: Graduate Student
CollegeFashionista: If you had to whittle down your wardrobe to five items, what would they be?
Kevin Fitzgerald: A white V-neck shirt, white Chuck Taylors, colored Levis jeans, my brown Members Only jacket and running shorts.
CF: Describe your personal style in three words.
KF: Understated, comfortable, worn.
CF: Is there an item or trend you want to try right now?
KF: So about a year ago I bought this cool-looking, old, washed-out Levi’s jean jacket from a thrift store. I wear it every so often, and whenever I do, I can’t help feeling kind of like an idiot. I guess I’d like to try to wear that more often—without the whole feeling like an idiot thing.
CF: What’s your favorite season to dress for and why?
KF: Being a distance runner, I’m used to not wearing a lot of clothes—short shorts, a T-shirt and running shoes. I feel like I’ve come to enjoy wearing less or lighter clothing. So I guess summer would be my favorite only because it means I don’t have to layer up on clothes. I feel like during the summer I can actually move around in what I’m wearing.
How To: Get this Fashionisto’s look by layering earth-toned staples together. Try pairing a subtley colored pair of denim with suede desert boots. To keep your palette interesting, try straying from the classic navy blazer and opt for a dark green or tan shade instead.
