Mixing and matching patterns is a fantastic way to make any outfit more interesting no matter what season. This University of Tennessee, Knoxville Fashionisto makes a bold statement on his first week of summer with a gingham shirt and thrifted vest. With a dramatic haircut and vibrant sunglasses, this Fashionisto is ready for any kind of summer soiree.
Name: Kevin Brown
Major: Public Relations and Business
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Kevin Brown: J.Crew shirt, pants from Gap, sunglasses from Wet Seal and Chacos. The vest was a Goodwill find.
CF: What was the inspiration for your outfit today?
KB: I love mixing patterns and textures, and the shirt and the vest surprisingly went well together! I try to dress in a way so I’m prepared for anything, be it watching a movie with friends or going out for a nice dinner.
CF: What are you most looking forward to about summer fashion?
KB: I cannot survive summer without my Chacos. They’re a tad unusual looking, but I practically never take them off. I’ve really embraced the top button on Oxford shirts. Poor little button never gets used.
CF: What are three must-have items for a well-dressed college student?
KB: I swear by my idea that every female should have a little black dress, a pair of patent leather pumps and a pair of black flats. Every guy should own a pair of dark wash jeans, a blazer and a bow tie. C’mon, bow ties are the best!
CF: Do you have any recommendations for guys who want to step up their fashion game?
KB: What’s great about guy’s fashion is that it’s easy. The best advice I have for guys is to invest in basics. A variety of basic articles of clothing allows you to mix and match while always looking put together. Also, cargo shorts are fashion sacrilege. Burn all the cargo shorts you own.
CF: Where do you go to find fashion inspiration? Do you have any style icons?
KB: I’ve really embraced trusting yourself when it comes to fashion. Your style is an expression of yourself, and one of the first things people can interpret about you. I love to experiment and push the boundaries of what people think is okay to wear. I never change my style, only add to it. Fashion is all about taking risks and being confident in what you’re wearing. Be bold!
How To: Gingham shirts with jeans are a classic pair for all seasons. Try out the pattern in navy, light blue or even pink, and choose a simple dark wash jean to let the gingham take center stage. Mix patterns as this Fashionisto does by throwing on a subtly striped vest or a dotted cardigan. Finish the look with sunglasses and a watch.
