Few fabrics bring a smile to my face quite like a fluorescent Lilly Pulitzer print. And in light of the style icon’s passing on April 8, this Fashionisto stands out even more as a proud representative of the Lilly spirit. He exudes a classic Southern confidence in cream buck shoes, a simple blazer and a seersucker bowtie that incorporates four unique pastel colors. Combining these simpler elements with his bold hot-pink-based pants creates a dynamic look that’s dressy yet still exciting and refreshing.
Name: Josh Whelan
Major: Arts & Letters Pre-Health and English
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?
Josh Whelan: I am wearing Lilly Pulitzer pants, a crocodile belt, white bucks, a Hamilton wristwatch, and a four-way seersucker bowtie by High Cotton Ties. I picked up these pants from John B. Rourke, a gentleman’s shop in Savannah. Actually, Lilly rarely makes men’s clothes nowadays so they are pretty unique. The bucks, bow tie and blazer all came from J. Parker Ltd., another one of my favorite gentlemen stores in Savannah. Between these two stores and my father’s closet I basically outfit my whole wardrobe.
CF: Where are you from originally? How does your hometown influence your style?
JW: I am from Savannah, Georgia, which I discovered upon coming to school in the Midwest has had a dominating role in the development of my style. Growing up frequenting the Savannah Golf Club and Sea Island, I was under the early and constant tutelage of my father, who too enjoys his wardrobe, and has, as I mentioned, passed down a lot of his clothes to me. I suppose you could classify my style as Southern preppy, or for those who lean towards Greek life, fraternity-esque, but I just call it Southern.
CF: Now that the weather’s warmer, what are you most excited to wear again?
JW: Short shorts and seersucker. They are two staples in my wardrobe that I have to keep in a box during the winter months here, but the sun is shining and Easter has passed, so it’s time to break ‘em out again.
CF: What are three must-have wardrobe items for any college male?
JW: My three must-haves are Polo khakis, button-downs and collared shirts. Whether you are untucked in tennis shoes or tucked in with loafers you just look better in khakis and a collar.
How To: Men’s Lilly Pulitzer pants are increasingly rare; however, emulate the look with another Southern tradition: Vineyard Vines. Try these green gingham pants or these slightly less adventurous solid green slacks. Make sure that your final choice is well tailored; nothing should distract from the bright print or color of the pants. For the same reason, choose a solid twill button-down and a neutral-toned shoe in any hue. Add a navy sport coat and tortoise shell glasses, and then finish off the gentlemanly look with a classic Lilly bow tie.
