Albert Camus once wrote, “In the depths of the winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” For this week’s Fashionisto, the motto is: “In the depths of the summer, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible winter.” New York is the home of style setters, infinite quirkiness and a steady supply of men who are unafraid of self-expression through fashion. Hailing originally from Singapore, this Fashionisto is no different. Rocking a platinum blonde mohawk, statement black accessories and a pair of classic yet modern leather shoes, he was a standout on the street. Taking strong influences from the east through his favorite Japanese designers, this Fashionisto blends into New York well with his all-black ensembles. While others are pulling out their salmon colored J.Crew shorts and pastel toned Ralph Lauren button-ups, this Fashionisto is going rogue, retreating back to solid, dark colors that strongly influence winter collections.
This look is easy to transition from day to night. The graphic T-shirt offers a casual look with a bit of edge while his white shorts provide a color contrast against the black. A good graphic T-shirt can really spruce up a plain outfit. Black and white are difficult to go wrong with, especially since both tones are so neutrally sophisticated and simple while still being able to make a statement. Not to mention, black and white pair perfectly with any other shade on the color spectrum.
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing right now?
Jonathan Han: Vintage Zara, pants: Uniqlo, shoes: Paul Smith and watch: Issey Miyake.
CF: How would you describe your style?
JH: I tend to wear a variety of styles; it really depends on how I am feeling but typically I always wear all-black.
CF: Where do you collect your influences from? Do you have any style idols?
JH: My influences are from mainly Japanese designers: Yohji Yamamoto, Junya Watanabe and Rei Kawabuko. I don’t really have any style idols; that’s too trendy for me to follow.
CF: What is a summer staple that you never leave the house without?
JH: I dress like winter when I am still in summer. I am not really a summer person.
CF: What is your favorite clothing piece? Is it the shoes, the shirts, the pants or the accessories? Tell us what and why!
JH: I have a huge collection of shoes. I like everything subtle yet detailed. I like interesting rings that have interesting materials or form.
CF: Describe your style for me in a sentence.
JH: All-black on the outside but raging colors on the inside.
