Fashionisto Spotlight

It’s that time of the year when everyone has the winter blues. However, this Fashionisto brought some new meaning to this term in his perfectly polished blue and gray ensemble. His blue chino pants complemented his blue striped sweater, and he finished off his look with grayish-blue Sperry Top-Siders. When I spotted him in this blue-hued outfit, I couldn’t help but stop him to ask about it.

Name: Brendan Owens

Major: Psychology

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about everything that you’re wearing today.

Brendan Owens: My coat is Chaps, my shirt is Bruno Menswear, my sweater is from JCPenney, my pants are Levi Brand Jeans and my shoes are Sperry Top-Siders. My bag is Merona from Target and my watch is Fossil.

CF: Which season is your favorite to dress for and why?

BO: Fall is definitely my favorite season for clothing. It’s not so cold that I have to bundle up, but not so hot that I can’t wear layers. I’m more of a pants guy than a shorts guy, and I like being able to mix and match and have fun with what I wear while still looking presentable.

CF: What is one item in your closet that you can’t live without?

BO: I have an American Eagle flannel shirt that I wear pretty religiously. It’s not fancy or anything, but it’s probably my most comfortable shirt and I’m all about living in comfort.

CF: What advice do you have for other guys who would like to dress better?

BO: I will be the first to tell you that I didn’t dress well at all when I first came to college. As time went on, I saw what looked good on other people and worked with it. What I observed is that you can definitely dress well without shopping at the most exquisite stores. On a college student’s salary (aka nonexistent), it’s not always possible to do so. Affordable and well dressed are not opposites!

How To: Layering a sweater over a button-down is one of the easiest ways to look put together while also staying warm in the colder months. Mixing and matching patterns is a great way to add a little originality to this classic look. Try pairing a gingham button-down with a striped sweater for an interesting, yet polished outfit. But be aware of the prints that you are pairing together; mixing patterns that are too similar will cause your outfit to look too busy!
