It was his hair that caught my eye. Sure, a lot of college boys wear plaid and boat shoes, but how many can pull off this modern day Elvis-do? Yet aside from the retro hair, the guy was also dressed in a classically stylish outfit that could be worn not only on campus, but pretty much anywhere. It was then that I knew I had a CollegeFashionisto moment for the books.
Name: Benjamin Martin
College Fashionista: Is there a certain time period that you look to for fashion inspiration?
Benjamin Martin: Definitely the 1950s. I like combining current styles with old ones.
CF: How would you describe your campus style?
BM: I tend to go with New England professor mixed with blue collared worker. Some days I put on a tweed jacket and tie and other days just a flannel shirt and dark jeans.
CF: What’s going on with your hair cut?
BM: It’s kind of a take on a ’50s haircut but a little more modernized.
CF: Where do you typically shop?
BM: I like H&M and vintage shopping too. I always find cool stuff at Plato’s closet and other stores in downtown Lawrence.
How to: To snag a look similar to Martin’s, start with a great pair of jeans, like these black basic jeans from Urban Outfitters. Next, a plaid shirt and neutral jacket are essential. Both pieces can go with anything and are super versatile. (As for girls, try tying a flannel around the waist in the vein of Rihanna or Kim Kardashian). For shoes, go with Martin’s choice of a basic boat shoe or try a Vans or Converse sneaker. Either option is both comfortable and cool.
