Fashionista Spotlight

If you’re anything like me, on December 6 you were cozied up with your computer waiting for Sephora and Pantone to announce the 2013 Color of the Year. So what a pleasant surprise it was for me to then meet this Fashionista, who was already rocking the year’s hottest color, emerald! Sporting a comfy sweater dress and warm neutral palette, this week’s Fashionista shows off a winter-ready look with bold pops of color in her earrings and lip color. Transition straight from finals into winter break with this casual chic ensemble!

Name: Sara Mykrantz
Major: Political Science and Mathematics
Year: Junior

College Fashionista: What are you wearing?
Sara Mykrantz: I'm wearing a dress from Forever 21, boots from Aldo, earrings from Francesca's and a bracelet from J.Crew.

CF: What was the inspiration for your outfit today? Where do you typically find fashion inspiration?
SM: This week it's been warmer than usual for December, so I wanted to wear a dress once more before the wintry weather strikes! I find inspiration in the people around me. Whenever I'm walking around campus and I see someone wearing a cute outfit, I automatically think about what's in my closet and how I can emulate that look. My friends and I all have very different styles so it's fun to sometimes borrow their clothes and try out a new style.

CF: What items are on the top of your fashion wish list this Christmas?
SM: I never used to wear many accessories, but lately I have been trying to experiment with jewelry. I would love to get a few new pairs of cute earrings and some chunky necklaces for Christmas. You can make a boring outfit so much more fun just by adding a cool pair of earrings.

CF: If you were stranded in a South Bend snowstorm, what three winter items would you want to have with you?
SM: Without a doubt, I would have my boots with me. I feel like they make even my ridiculously oversized marshmallow coat look cute. I would also want to have my knit hat to keep my ears warm and one of my cozy scarfs!

CF: You’re studying in Fremantle, Australia next semester. How do you think the move will affect your style?
SM: Currently, I always plan out my outfits and am known for wearing as many layers as possible because I'm always freezing! In Australia, the culture is much more laid back and it is certainly warmer there. I'll probably be more inclined to adapt to the care-free lifestyle and just throw on whatever I'm feeling that morning. I also will have to retire my beloved sweaters, scarves, and boots for a semester.

How To: Follow Sephora and Pantone’s advice to incorporate rich green into your wardrobe, accessories, and makeup this holiday season. Sara’s earrings brighten up her neutral outfit and make her blue eyes pop; do the same with a bold cocktail ring, intricate necklace, or your own pair of teardrop earrings. These Amrita Singh bangles (in emerald, of course) are my go-to bracelet choice since they integrate so well into the Notre Dame color scheme! Keep your base layer simple with a sweater dress, leggings, and cognac-colored boots. This Urban Outfitters dress will let your accessories shine while offering subtle detailing in its pattern and cut. Finish off your look with bold lips in berry tones.
