I'm back home for winter break. Not much has changed since I last roamed the boardwalk of Ft. Lauderdale beach, including the weather. Although it's just starting to cool down, there are some summer looks that us South Floridians are able to pull off this season. My good friend and favorite Fashionista, Sam, flaunts mixed prints and inverted colors in this fun, feminine ensemble you'd never expect to see in winter.
Name: Samantha Rose
Major: Comparative Literature
CollegeFashionista: Where did you find all the elements of this pretty outfit?
Samantha Rose: The floral top is thrifted, the polka dot skirt is H&M, my belt is Anthropologie, the satchel is from DSW and my sandals are from Payless. And the sterling silver bracelets were my mom's.
CF: How would you describe your personal style?
SR: I think it’s girly meets eclectic, and sometimes it can be funky.
CF: What are your favorite trends at the moment?
SR: Right now I’m into bright colors, more daring pieces and mixing different prints and patterns.
CF: What is your fashion pet peeve?
SR: I can’t stand certain shoe styles, like Crocs. Also Uggs — they’re ugly; that’s what they stand for!
CF: If you could raid any celebrity’s closet, who would it be and why?
SR: Anne Hathaway because no matter what, she always looks so classy and put-together.
CF: Name a couple of designers that you like.
SR: That’s hard; there are so many. I’d have to say Betsey Johnson and Erin Fetherston. I once saw Erin Fetherston’s clothing line for Target, and when I checked out her individual work, it was really cute too.
How to: To recreate this chic romantic vibe, pick a camisole with small flowery detail. Then, find a skirt with a similar color scheme as the top, but not necessarily the same print. Play up the contrast how you want. For instance, this kissy lips top from PacSun and polka dot skirt from ModCloth work great together. Next, add solid-colored accessories, strappy sandals and a large purse to tone down the already adventurous clothing combination. Accentuate with a few simple silver bangles, and voilà: a perfect go-to outfit for a South Floridian winter.
