FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Nancy Lin

Uncategorized

This Fashionista and I spend a while on the windy steps outside the communications building at uni talking all things fashion. She shares all her favourite brands and reveals she takes inspiration from icons like the Olsen twins to costumes from Gone With the Wind. This Fashionista is switched on and friendly and definitely deserving of the spotlight.

Name: Nancy Lin

Major: Professional Communication

Year: Second

College Fashionista: How would you describe your personal style?

Nancy Lin: I'm not sure — I actually have to dress pretty conservatively because my body's really sensitive to cold. I like collars, capes, coats, nice pants, neutral colours, corduroy, velvet and a good pair of boots. I'm also never seen without a scarf. Silk scarves are my favourite.

CF: What are some of your favorite brands?

NL: Acne, Gorman, Alphaville, NASTY GAL, ASOS, Need Supply Co., Zara, Friend of Mine, Shakuhachi, Issey Miyake, I could go on! But some of my best finds have actually been in op shops, markets or from overseas.

CF: Who would you consider an inspirational style icon?

NL: I've never liked her — but I've always thought Victoria Beckham has impeccable fashion sense. Also, Carine Roitfeld, Anna Wintour, the Olsen twins, Chloë Sevigny, Michelle Obama, Charlotte from Sex & the City and I've always had a big thing for Scarlett O'Hara's dresses in Gone With the Wind.

CF: Do you think RMIT students have a particular style?

NL: Yeah, for sure. RMIT students and people who mingle around the CBD definitely encapsulate what Melbourne fashion is all about. It's very hipster (laughing).

CF: What is your winter essential?

NL: Gloves, I think they're really underrated.

How To: I think this look comes together nicely because of the colour palette. By sticking to deep blue fabrics and mixing them up with greys, the cool hues are given a unifying softness. The boxy cape is worn perfectly with well fitting pants and tailored Hilfiger sweater. The blue suede shoes (Hey Presley) and Longchamp bag tie the look together by confirming an intentional blue monochrome outfit. Longchamp are an iconic brand who make beautiful bags in classic styles and heaps of colours. This Fashionnista knows how to pull off a cape too. American Apparel has a fleece cape and a wool cape in assorting colours.
