I am so happy that it finally looks and feels like fall here on the east coast. I not only love seeing all the leaves change color, but most importantly I can finally wear my leopard scarf, studded knee-high boots and all of my favorite knit sweaters. Since I am home for fall break, I not only spent time at all my favorite stores, but visited friends and observed how college students wear the hottest trends on their campuses. I decided to photograph a trendy college student at Connecticut College for this week's Fashioinista spotlight feature. I was initially drawn to this trendsetter because of her well styled outfit and fabulous accessories, but I also love that Marina knows exactly what to wear for her body type and is not afraid to be unique. Along with skinny jeans and a brown knit sweater, this fashion-forward student is wearing knee-high leather boots from Spain and pulled her whole look together with orange feather earrings and a rainbow colored scarf.
Name: Marina Sachs
CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?
Marina Sachs: Although I have a lot of clothes from J.Crew, I do not think I am distinctively preppy. All of my outfits do not revolve around one particular style; I love mixing colors and patterns and absolutely love accessories. I love mixing my preppy pieces with bohemian items from Free People, Urban Outfitters or Nastygal.com.
CF: Would you say your college campus has a definitive style?
MS: I think that Conn College does not have a definitive style. The guys here are very preppy, but the girls are more mixed. While there are plenty of preppy dressers, there is also a share of hipsters. Most importantly, everyone here on campus has their own style and works the newest trends differently.
CF: Do you turn towards the media/magazines or more friends and family for fashion advice?
MS: I do not necessarily turn towards magazines or the media on how to work the latest trends into my wardrobe, but instead I search in stores for pieces that catch my eye and that work with my style.
How To: Fall is just not complete without a great pair of boots. This Fashionista illustrates that boots can not only transform your outfit, but really pull the whole look together. Besides lace-up booties and leopard wedges, I am all about knee-highs this season. Whether the boots be leather or suede, you can find trendy boots everywhere but it is up to you to decide which pair works best with your style!
Even if you are not supermodel tall, you can rock knee-high boots. But no matter your height, you must be mindful when you wear shorts, skirts and dresses so that you do not resemble Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, pre-Rodeo Drive shopping spree. I love these knee-highs by Michael Kors, but if you aren't feeling the height of these boots, then go with this pair from Bloomingdale's. Most importantly an outfit is not complete without accessories! Do not forget to wear jewels, a scarf or a funky belt with every look.
